it looks like michael jackson got some ideas for his smooth criminal song/video from this classic …
December 28th, 2008 at 10:56 am
hold up people are saying michael isnt on fred astaires level as a dancer? are you kiddin me michael would kill astaire in a DANCE competition remeber fred has basically one or two styles of dance im pretty sure if he tried to do other styles via popping, hip hop, disco, locking he wouldnt come cloose to mj… as a matter of fact michael can imitate fred’s basic style better than fred can imitate michael’s basic stlye… mike is on on a whole nother level via his versatility he’s more complete

I made a painting of Fred and Cyd from this scene,he in the white suit and Cyd in the flaming red dress and black gloves. It,s too beautufull !

The whole Girl Hunt sequence is stunning. Much as i liked Ginger, Cyd was his best partner, she sizzles, and this film is the equal of Singin in the Rain as all-time top musical. Dancing in the Dark is another standout with Fred + Cyd. Best Fred + Ginger routine ? I’d say Never Gonna Dance in Swing Time.

Ginger came from comedy before she got linked to Fred and that worked very well
January 5th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
Ginger was funny, she and Fred could connect on another level than dance, that had a certain chemie. Movies with Ginger in it are more comics than the other musicals from Astaire with other wonderfull dancing ladies

GINGER was a metaphor for female…FRED for male..thats why they are linked together FOREVER…ELEANOR was a UNIQUE STRONG AGGRESSIVE SOLOIST..as for CYD…well..she was the epitome of SENSUALITY AND ELEGANCE..and she REVELED IN IT..her BODY was a work of GOD..AND BALLET…all eyes stayed fixed on HER when she danced..and she NEVER was VULGAR…
January 10th, 2009 at 6:10 am
Michael was influenced by Fred and other good dancers, nothing wrong with that. The fact is wether you,re influ or not; you gotta have the talent to put it together and make somthing out of it,Michael hah that talent,I myself could not do it
January 12th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Ginger was the most famous for some reason but Cyd Charrisse, Ann Miller and Eleanor Powell were MUCH better dancers than her. In the Fred and Ginger dances, it was obvious that Fred was so much better than her and carrying her, but when any man dances with Cyd Charrisse all eyes are on HER even if that man is Fred Astaire!
January 12th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Cyd is a much better dancer than Ginger! Ginger is not really a natural dancer. She was an actress who had to learn to be a dancer. And she did well but Cyd is A dancer. Ginger is the most famous but Eleanor Powell and Ann Miller were better tap dancers and Cyd was a better dancer than her.

Michael did a lot of tap dancing on the Jacksons variety show in the 70′s, he never really went deep in tap dancing though.
It’s unfair to compare astaire with MJ, there extremely different in style and music. and Michael certainley could never tap like gene kelly or astaire, but he created his own style atleast. They are all talented in different things. some better than the other. but MJ and Fred atsaire seemed to be good friends (astaire called MJ after Motown 25 to tell him how proud he was
January 14th, 2009 at 10:36 am
its common knowledge that MICHAEL JACKSON AND FRED ASTAIRE ADORED EACH OTHER..stop comparing the two…and just ENJOY them…CYD …sigh…you KNOW you were a GODDESS…A CLASS STUDY IN PHYSICALITY ..AND SENSUALITY…BRAVO DARLING…and REST IN PEACE…
January 16th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Your right. There is no comparison. Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly were great dancers! MJ can’t compare with thses men. He is not even in their league.
January 17th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
How can you even compare the two? Obviously, Michael Jackson is a good dancer and so were Kelly and Astaire. They’re both good in different ways. They didn’t dance the same style, they weren’t from the same era, they didn’t dance to the same music. It’s stupid to compare them.

Cyd Charisse was the greatest female dancer to ever grace the silver screen. Check out our tribute to her at: (remove spaces)groups. msn. com/ classiccinema/ reviews. msnw?all_topics=1
And here is a terrific short biography link:

Tap Dancer? Wake up. MJ never has done tap dancing. Watch some videos here on You Tube of Kelly and Astaire. That is tap dancing.
January 25th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Are you kidding us? Much better dancers? Kelly and Astaire were the best. No one can compare. Michael Jackson is nothing.
January 27th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
She may not be as smooth and natural as Ginger, but she’s OMG hot!!!
January 29th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
I guess this where Michael Jackson the concept from for the video Smooth Criminal. One of Astaire’s move MJ also does in the video.
January 31st, 2009 at 8:52 am
Well, I guess that’s a matter of opinion. MJ is/was a very excellent tap dancer in his own right. You also have to consider that MJ was never professionally trained.

“This one scene beats any “Fred and Ginger” number.”
I think this is terrific but compared to the Fred and Ginger stuff it’s terrible. The best Fred and Ginger were the best dances evr recorded. And I don’t mean just in their sort of style of dance, I mean that in the top ten dances ever recorded, a least the the first three would Fred and Ginger. This might ge into the top thirty.

Nice dancing. I do believe that Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire were much better dancers to the very talented dancer Michael Jackson. Jackson doesn’t have the same kind of charm to him I think, no disrespect to him though.
February 4th, 2009 at 11:51 am
I totally agree! This is one of the sexiest
and stylish dance sequences and I never tire
of watching it.
